Kim Phuc (b. 1963) was the subject of an iconic photograph taken on June 8, 1972 by Nick Ut during the Viet Nam war. She has lived in Ontario since 1992.
Scherman contacted Phuc who agreed to sit for a portrait. He focused on Phuc’s skin and the permanent damage caused by the napalm attack. He used melted wax (encaustic) to represent what her skin looks and feels like today.
